Gimbal stabilised cinema FPV
An FPV airframe gives you the speed and the line. A stabilised gimbal gives you a horizon you can cut with. We fly both together, with a cinema sensor on the front, and we were one of the first units in South Africa building that rig.
What the gimbal actually changes
On a raw FPV quad the camera is bolted to the airframe. Every input the pilot makes to move the aircraft also moves the frame. Roll the quad to turn and the horizon rolls with it. That look is real and sometimes it is the shot, but it arrives with three costs a DP notices in the grade: a rolling horizon, propeller wash and vibration in the image, and a frame that reacts to wind rather than to the camera operator.
Gimbal stabilised FPV separates the two jobs. The airframe still flies like an FPV quad, so the speed, the descent rate and the tight line survive. The camera sits on a three axis gimbal, so the horizon holds level, the pan is deliberate, and the roll is a decision rather than a side effect. What you get back on the card is FPV energy with cinema discipline, and it intercuts with the A camera instead of sitting apart from it.
In practice that means the shot can be repeated. Raw FPV moves are often one good take out of many because the frame is a byproduct of the flying. With a stabilised head the framing is consistent enough that a director can ask for the same move again, tighter.
The rig and the payloads
Two payload options cover almost everything. The Red Komodo 6K goes on the gimbal rig when the shot has to cut with the A camera. A GoPro goes on a light FPV frame when the gap is too small or the risk is too high for a cinema body.

The global shutter on the Komodo matters more on FPV than on any other platform we fly. A rolling shutter sensor moving that fast, that close to hard vertical edges, skews the frame. The Komodo does not, which is why it lives on the cinelifter.
For context on the rest of the fleet, the Inspire 3 carries the Zenmuse X9-8K Air (full frame, up to 8K 25 fps CinemaDNG and 8K 75 fps ProRes RAW, and full frame 4K 120 fps ProRes RAW in slow and quick mode). The Mavic 4 Pro records 6K 60 fps or 4K 120 fps with 10 bit D-Log on its main camera. The Freefly Alta X lifts up to 15.9 kg when the shot needs the big camera. FPV is one instrument in that set, not a replacement for it.
The shots it unlocks
Vehicle chase
The one everybody asks for. The rig holds station off a moving car, then closes, drops to wheel height, crosses the bonnet and climbs away in one move. A tracking vehicle cannot make the vertical part of that move and a conventional cinema drone cannot make the acceleration. Speed matching is the real skill, not top speed.
Single take interior
Through a doorway, along a corridor, up a stairwell, out of a window and away over the exterior. It reads as one continuous idea, which is exactly why it is worth the setup. Interiors are also where the honest limits below bite hardest.
Proximity
Close passes to rock, structure, foliage, water or talent. Framing this close is only useful if the horizon is stable, which is the whole argument for the gimbal.
Dive
A committed vertical descent down a cliff, a building face or a stack, holding the subject in frame the whole way. On a raw FPV rig the horizon tumbles through the dive. On the gimbal rig it stays where the DP put it.
Reveal
Starting tight on a detail and pulling back or lifting to expose the landscape or the set. Standard drone work does this slowly. FPV does it with a change of pace inside the same take.
Crew and safety on set
Cinema FPV is not a single operator job. The minimum working unit is a pilot and a dedicated spotter with eyes on the aircraft and the line at all times. Anything involving vehicles, talent in frame or a proximity pass gets a walked rehearsal at reduced speed before the camera rolls.
- Pilot flying, plus a spotter on visual line of sight. On a chase the spotter usually rides in the tracking vehicle.
- A safety brief with the first AD and the stunt coordinator before the first pass, covering the flight line, the abort call and where the aircraft goes if the link drops.
- A cleared corridor. Nobody stands in or under the flight line who is not in the shot and briefed.
- Battery cycles planned into the schedule. Cinema FPV runs short flights, so the day is built around swaps rather than interrupted by them.

Dimitri Vaindirlis has been licensed since 2017 with roughly 480 hours. The pilot who scopes the shot flies it.
The honest limits
This is the part that saves a schedule, so we would rather say it in the recce than on the day.
- Flight time. A cinema payload on an FPV frame gives you short flights, not long ones. Plan the day in passes, not in hours, and expect a battery swap between takes.
- Wind. FPV can fly in more wind than it can film in. Gusting conditions cost you the smoothness that justified using the gimbal in the first place, and coastal Cape Town locations turn over fast in the afternoon.
- Proximity risk. Close passes near talent, glass, vehicles or livestock need a closed set, a rehearsal and a stunt conversation. If the production cannot close it, we fly the GoPro version or we find another line.
- Interiors. Confined spaces mean no GPS hold, prop wash off walls and ceilings, and dust or set dressing moving in frame. They also mean crew evacuated from the flight path, which costs turnaround time.
- Lens choice. FPV runs wide. If the brief needs a long lens look, that shot belongs on the Inspire 3 or a heavy lift platform, not on this rig.
- Light. The short flights and the wide lens push you toward more light rather than less. Magic hour is possible but the window is genuinely a window.
- What needs a closed set. Vehicle chase at speed, any pass over or between people, low work on a public road, and anything inside a building with crew present.
What we need from the production
- The move, described as a move. A reference clip beats a paragraph.
- Whether the location can be closed, and who controls it.
- Vehicle speeds, if there is a chase, and who is driving.
- Delivery format and the codec the edit is cutting in, so the card matches the pipeline.
- The date and the light you want. Wind and permits both key off that.
